United Colors of Inventions – How Diversification Can Actually Be Great Fr Joint Ventures

International joint ventures are too evident everywhere. From the shirt and pair of jeans you wear to mobile phones you pocket, car you drive and computer you work with. Products (and services, too) are definitely amalgam of companies who made joint venture agreements.

Successful companies just do not monopolize work anymore. They outsource them anywhere that meets their standards. Not merely because of cheaper productions, companies outsource and make more international joint venture agreements to localize their products. Remember the mantra, “Think global, act local?” The principle was the binding spell for companies. Suddenly, you find Coca-Cola collaborated with local industrial designers to produce custom-fit ads and products. They recently launched Coke solo in the Philippines to sell-out in a “sachet market”.

Moreover, companies outsource works, especially in target countries, for faster production and distribution. When Amway was losing from big shipping costs, the company immediately closed their centralized distribution centers. They built local manufacturing-distribution plants and partnered with wholesalers to distribute products more quickly.

Open a computer and you will see the obvious products of joint ventures. Its central processor may come from Texas Instruments or Intel. Its operating system may be from Linux, Apple or Microsoft. Chinese engineers may have developed the circuit board. Taiwanese may have designed its LCD monitor. Its audio may be from Realtek. Its modem and Bluetooth technology may be from another company like IXI Mobile Inc.

Also, check your mobile phone. It may have an operating system and browser from Symbian, Blackberry or Microsoft. Its audio may be from Sony. China may have made and finished its battery.

Even in travel industry, packaged services are also products of joint ventures of airline, local transportation, tours, hotels, food and even souvenirs.

International joint ventures have indeed reinvented products and services in a faster pace. Without these courageous joint ventures, Samsung could have not launched its version of touch phones immediately after iPhone.

Alabama Real Estate – A Southern Air

Alabama is undeniably a stereotypical southern state, but the state and real estate market hold undeniable surprises.

Alabama

Alabama is distinctly southern and darn proud of it. If you have a taste for college football, country music and NASCAR, Alabama is a paradise defined. To the surprise of many, Alabama also has a more modern flavor with Huntsville being the home of a major chunk of the U.S. Space Program. For golfers, the collection of golf courses winding through the state, known as the Robert Trent Jones golf trail, make Alabama one of the top golfing destinations in the continental United States. Personally, I prefer the annual iron bowl college football war between the Auburn and Alabama universities, but to each their own…

Huntsville

Home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Huntsville is undoubtedly the pyrotechnic capital of the south. With a distinct southern charm, the city is laid out well with parks, botanical gardens, lake areas and a close proximately to numerous outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking and hunting. While many cities make a haberdash of mixing in the new with the old, Huntsville gets it just right.

Mobile

Pronounced “Moe beel”, Mobile is a busy port city with a little known history. If you’ve ever thought of going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, you’re better off going to Mobile. Yep, the city was the first to celebrate Mardi Gras in the United States and maintains the tradition to this day. In fact, Mobile looks striking like New Orleans, having been established by the French. It is a beautiful southern city, with spring being the best time as a bevy of flowing plants awaken from their winter slumber. The colors and fragrances are simply amazing.

Alabama Real Estate

Alabama real estate prices are very reasonable when compared to the rest of the country. Throughout the state, an average home will run you $200,000 or less. The appreciation rate is a little low, but still a respectable 7.5 percent for 2005.

Maine Tourism

Maine is truly a scenic wonder and a place for all seasons. The overall weather conditions are a priceless advantage to Maine’s year-round vacation travel industry. Maine is nicknamed “The Pine Tree State.” It is attributable to the extensive pine forests covering the state. The state is noted for its wildlife, gardens, waterfalls, caves, cliffs and estuaries. Tourists can relax at one of the sandy beaches or travel around and explore the coast, mountains and woods. Or they can even board a boat and go whale and puffin watching. Maine’s inland lakes and ponds make available exciting boating opportunities.

The state parks at Maine are a perennial attraction where visitors can indulge in crystal clear lakes surrounded by lush green forests. Baxter State Park, the largest of Maine’s state parks, is also home to Mt. Katahdin, the highest peak in the state. Mountain climbing and hiking opportunities flourish around the park. Many of the state parks provide added amenities such as grills, picnic tables, playgrounds, restrooms, snack bars, campsites and nature trails, making them just the perfect place for a complete family outing. Maine even boasts a state park on an island that can be reached only by private boat.

The striking lighthouses and quaint fishing villages with countless bays, harbors and islands contribute to the natural splendor of the coastline. Magnificent homes which belonged to the 19th century sea captains mark the seaside towns. The numerous festivals of Maine celebrate the state’s rich cultural heritage. Maine has more surviving forts than any other state. Historic homes such as those of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Lucy Farnsworth are maintained as museums.

Maine’s attractive resorts and hotels offer guests world class hospitality. Several seafood restaurants dot the coastline, and lobsters underline the menus in many Maine restaurants. American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, and United Airlines provide non-stop air service to and from Maine to major U.S. cities such as Boston, Albany, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Detroit, Chicago, and Minneapolis among many others. International car rental agencies like Avis, Budget, Hertz and National offer tourists exceptional service while in Maine.

Fly High! The Secret to Airline Interviews

Is your dream job visiting places around the world as a flight stewardess or pilot? Daunted and overwhelmed by airline interviews?

The fact is that the airline job market has become a very competitive career battlefield nowadays. Though the airline industry has somewhat moved on from the economic crunch that toppled major carriers like Delta Airlines, United Airlines and more recently Japan Airlines, there has been a growth in discount carriers like JetAir and Virgin Blue while regional operators, charter and cargo carriers also increased their flight coverage. This upsurge has opened new job positions in the airline industry.

KNOW

First things first, you have to get a sense on what you want to do and where you are going. Employee interview questions on your job expectations and choice of airline carrier will gauge your interest for the job and the company itself. Let’s face it, an airline job is not a career but a lifestyle that means you have to give up a lot of social life and weekends. Think it over if working in the airline industry is good for you.

Know everything about the airline you are interested in working with. So whether if it is chartered or scheduled, short haul or long haul, domestic or regional, you should know that airline carriers operate differently. Do some research about the company and know the officials, airplanes being used, corporate culture, work environment and job description.

UNDERSTAND

Most employee interview questions vary according to company, airline operation and job position you applied for but standard interview questions generally focus on practical knowledge. In this case, you will be asked on how you are going to respond in real-world job situations like how you as a pilot handle an emergency landing or how you as a flight attendant handle potential security threats during flights.

Try looking for interview gouge websites that offer standard interview questions from different airlines. These interview gouge sites provide you an insider look from people who post their interview experiences. It is a very big help if you really want to understand how the interview process works and employer interview questions that are being asked. Take note, some airline interviews are more in-depth than a typical interview.

PREPARE

Preparation is a crucial ingredient to your interview success. However, some important issues are rarely discussed because from time to time there are situations during the interview process that you may not expect. Just bear in mind that the most important thing is the way you handle the interview rather than the way you answer the questions.

Job interview coaching is a better way of preparing for airline interviews as interview coaches will provide you needed guidance in a simulated interview setting. Interview questions coaching will also help boost your confidence. And being a prepared and confident interviewee will make you the job candidate that employers want to hire.

How Air Conditioners Hurt, and What HVAC Technicians, Architects and Americans Can Do About It

There’s little doubt that home air conditioners and whole-house air systems are necessary in the United States, particularly in the parts of the nation where summer temperatures can cause serious harm or even death to infants, invalids, and the elderly.

However, the effects of these air conditioners on the Earth can be devastating. Depending upon which neighborhood, and in which region of the country a person resides, he or she might — or might not — have whole-house air conditioning. As recent years’ summer temperatures have set records across regions such as the Northeast and East Coast (which previously had cooler summers) people increasingly turn to portable window and floor units to cool down.

These portable home and office units, which cool rooms by funneling hot indoor air back outdoors, can release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere. Stricter environmental regulations on air conditioning and HVAC systems, beginning with the Montreal Protocol of 1987, have caused air conditioner manufacturers to fundamentally alter system design and chemical composition. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are now banned, creating a lot of good work for newly-certified refrigeration and HVAC technicians who can alter or replace environmentally hazardous systems.

However, they continue to contribute to global warming, besides using prodigious amounts of energy as they blast on, each summer, across the United States. This is because air conditioners require electricity to run – and, the fundamental production of electricity causes carbon-filled waste emissions to be released into the atmosphere. Environmentalists posit that this is but one possible cause of increasing global temperatures.

Ironically, as our summers heat up, they are used more frequently – which, in turn, cause our summers to heat up. Cooler summer evenings mean that individuals and families don’t need to run A/C units when they are home. But during the summers we’ve been having, there is no cool-down period. In many cities, home air conditioners run 24/7, from April until November.

So, what’s the solution? First, more stringent environmental regulations must be applied to all cooling units. Banning CFCs from new and old systems is a great start; however, our HVAC workers and our government must ensure that all existing systems use “green” materials to cool air.

Getting more HVAC technicians trained and certified is another great move. The more qualified technicians we have in the American job market, able to clean, update, install, and repair energy-wasting cooling systems, the better off our environment will be, long-term. Malfunctioning HVAC systems use enormous amounts of electricity, and some poorly functioning units can emit other hazardous materials, as well. Keeping the number of qualified HVAC technicians in the market high will lead to better-maintained, more energy-efficient air conditioners across the country.

Efficiency in air conditioning systems should be expanded to industry, as well. There exist many wonderful products that some of us use daily, such as pasta and chocolate, which cannot be manufactured or shipped without the aid of air conditioning. However, in many production factories, the workers themselves do not enjoy air-conditioned work environments. Ultimately, their productivity is slowed, and their health is adversely affected. The strategic, energy efficient use of cooling systems in industry is another smart way to achieve environmental balance.

Finally, architects and contractors must push for energy-efficient building and office park designs. Pre-fabricated offices without windows, and factory-finished homes with flimsy construction are commonplace today. From an energy conservation standpoint, these structures are conservation-poor when compared to the solid brick and stone houses with high roofs of yesterday. Brad Pitt made headlines recently for his continuing efforts to help re-build hurricane-ravaged New Orleans with “green” architecture that maximizes efficient energy use. It’s time for the rest of us to follow suit. Even here, learned HVAC consultants can help plan living spaces so that maximum cooling efficiency with minimal energy use is achieved.

Holiday Airport Delays

The Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest holiday periods for airport travelers in the country. You remember the Jetblue disaster last year? Sitting on the tarmac for 8 hours! Jetblue and other airlines have made changes since then but there are things you can do to make your traveling a little less stressful.

U.S. airlines will carry 27 million more passengers during the week before and after the holiday. That is a 4% increase over the norm (about 600,000 more passengers per day). Inevitably that means if you are traveling this holiday season there is a good chance that you will be delayed. What to do? Read on:

1. Obtain real-time airport delay information before you leave home. This site is brought to you by the FAA. You can also obtain more information at this site by clicking on your specific airport.

2. Check-in before you arrive so all you have to do is drop-off your stuff, show your i.d. and be on your way (depending on the airline you are traveling with). I have done this with American Airlines, Jetblue and United although many others offer this feature online – just go to their website.

3. If you are delayed or a flight is canceled, call the airlines 1-800 number while you are in line to get on the next available flight. If you are at the counter, DO NOT LEAVE until they get you on another acceptable flight. This even means putting you on another airline, ASK to do so if they do not offer.

4. Bring as little as you can when you go through security. The less stuff you have, the faster you will get through. Make sure to check the items you can and can not bring.

5. That said, you should bring a few things to make your wait a little more enjoyable. A few things you can bring include: a favorite book, your laptop (many airports offer Fi or have hook-ups available), puzzle books, handheld games (electronic or not), or for some, work.

6. If you have children make sure you pack extra snacks, diapers, formula and favorite toys or games. Diapers and formula are expensive and/or unavailable at the airport.

7. A comfy coat is a good item to have in case you have to use it as a pillow or blanket to sleep/rest.

8. Bring patience and a feeling of holiday joy while traveling and know you are not in it alone. There are 26 million people in the same predicament.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Traveling!

401K-itis

Are you one of those many people who dread reading their 401K statements? You have been watching it decline for about 2 years and are wondering if will ever stop. Just about everyone says the market will come back. Brokers say you are in for the long haul so don’t worry. Any account that drops to a 50% loss has to go up 100% to get “even” and that is a very difficult phenomenon. If you have an 80% loss as has already occurred in the Nasdaq you would need a 400% rally to get “even”. At 90% you have to see a 900% rise to that mythical “even”.

Buy and Hold has been preached so long and so loudly that everyone believes it. As Adolph Hitler said when you tell a lie tell a big one. Wall Street has been screaming this one down the throats of investors for so long it has become conventional wisdom. Look at your 401K today and compare it to 2 years ago and tell me you believe in Buy and Hold. Common sense will not allow it.

Every broker has been taught that market timing doesn’t work. Yes, they teach them that and they have been good students. The problem is they have had a bad teacher. Within the funds you now own the fund managers buy and SELL many times during the year because there is a time to sell. Selling is the key to successful stock market investing.

A friend mine came to me with his wife’s 401K from United Airlines. It is composed of 8 Fidelity mutual funds. The employee can pick any one or more. Since the first of the year six of the eight are down from 3% to 27% (average 10.77%) and the other two were up an average of 3%. The two that are up are fixed income funds otherwise known as bond funds. If you have a 401K, IRA or SEP or almost any mutual funds the only place to preserve your capital during this secular bear market is in a bond fund – a no-load bond fund. Do NOT pay commission for these. And there are many of them.

For years Wall Street has condemned those of us who use market timing. Well, you can call me what you want, but I will have my money when the Buy and Holders are broke.

Stock mutual funds do not work in a long-term bear market. Mutual funds, as we have known them for the past 20 years, are dead. You now have only two choices within your retirement account for your money – a bond fund or a plain money market account. Don’t cry that you will only make 5% on your money. Think about the 20% to 40% you will not lose. According to Lipper 99% of U.S. equity funds lost money in the second quarter. I have been telling investors for years – cash is a position.

Enronitis broke thousands of people because they would not (could not) sell as the stock broke down. Don’t let 401K-itis break you.
